La sal de la sala

-Mama, mama, a escola em diuen que tinc la tita com una ametlleta!!
-De petitona?
-Nooo, de saladeta!!

Avui, en el marc d'una visita a un edifici antic, han explicat una suposada etimologia segons la qual la paraula sala podria estar relacionada amb el fet que allà s'hi pagava el salari. Així, sal, sala i salari formarien una família de paraules etimològicament relacionades.

M'he permès d'expressar els meus dubtes sobre aquesta hipòtesi i la intuïció (ho descric així perquè no estic segur d'haver-ho escoltat mai) que 'sala' està relacionada amb el mot anglès 'hall'. De totes maneres, per un moment se m'ha girat el cap perquè sal en grec deu ser halos. Recordo que les plantes que viuen al costat del mar i no els molesta la salabror es diuen halòfiles! Tot i que sigui una bestiesa, d'alguna manera em motiva a consultar-ho!

La sala és d'origen germànic. Ja anem bé per trobar la connexió amb hall!

Per ara em quedo aquí, però ja sembla que el lligam entre el mot anglès i una arrel germànica i àdhuc indo-europea és raonable. I per tant, el lligam amb la sala. El que no veig per enlloc és la sal, malgrat la similitud entre halos i hall.
